 PLANNING BY DESIGN

Presented by

David Oliver & Ian Madgwick

Plato Video has just released Planning by Design an innovative training video on Town & Country Planning matters involving residential design. Three volumes, eighty-five minutes total running time, detailed illustrated work book and a sequenced timing list together make up a comprehensive package. To produce this video Plato Video visited five countries and filmed in thirty-five locations.

The video is the brainchild of David Oliver, former District Architect for West Dorset District Council. Its basic purpose is to illustrate ways in which designers and developers of new housing should set about their work. Innovative methods of doing this are explored so that the mistakes of much post war residential development can be avoided.

David Oliver, who scripted the video and presents it, has been closely involved in the development of the Duchy of Cornwall's exciting new settlement at Poundbury since its inception on plan and viewers are taken through the design processes which lead to the evolution of Phase 1 which is now complete and in place. Ways of designing residential roads to avoid clumsy and intrusive traffic calming techniques but achieve the same results are considered in detail.

All the points made by the presenters are illustrated by pictures or diagrams and plans, as appropriate. Where necessary, the video camera takes to the air to look down on contrasting development patterns and distinguishes the good from the bad.

At a time when the virtue of good design is taking ever increasing importance in Town Planning matters, this easy to watch video should be welcomed by practitioners and Local Authorities alike. An informative and illustrated workbook sets out all the main discussion points, and a sequenced timing list ensures speedy access to individual segments. The end result is an entertaining and instructive teaching aid.

Free tourist leaflets for USA located Frank Lloyd Wright's 'Falling Water' and Mies van der Rohe's 'Farnsworth House' accompany this comprehensive package.

MAIN FEATURES

Practitioners and Students of architecture, planning and construction will appreciate the simplicity and ease with which new living communities can be established that respect local tradition.

In order to explore and expand his horizons, every designer must consider how other designers function. Deisgners will gain a real insight into laying out new estates and will be especially attracted to the basic method of fitting roads into settings rather than vice versa.

Sequences from the air dramatically illustrate comparisons between good design and pattern book planning.

An enjoyable and instructive video that shows how developers and Local Authorities can work together to achieve visually harmonious development that maintains local distinctiveness and character.

The new settlement of Poundbury and its driving philosophy are closely examined and illustrated by the activities of those that live, perform, trade and shop in exciting new enclosures.

A detailed illustrated workbook enhances the video pack and a sequenced timing list ensures speedy access to individual segments
